Project Information

The existing 2.8 mile reach of earthen trapezoidal channel constructed in 1963 was determined to be deficient in its ability to convey 100-yr storm flows due to extensive vegetation growth on the north/east side of the channel. The project proposes to restore the channel to its as-built condition by removing the vegetation along the north/east side except for a 40-foot wide buffer. The project also proposes to remove any excess sediment that has accumulated along the banks. Excavation within three (3) in-line sediment basins will also be accomplished in order to restore them to their original line and grade. The in-line basins were constructed in the 1980s as part of a Stormwater Sediment Control Plan for the purpose of trapping sediment prior to storm discharges entering Upper Newport Bay in order to protect the water quality in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. The ecological reserve is approximately 741-acres which is owned and operated by the California Department of Fish and Game.
