Talbert Channel Urban Runoff Diversion Project
The Huntington Beach Pump Station Urban Runoff Diversion Project was one of four
channel sites chosen for the Urban Runoff Diversion Project within the Talbert Valley
and Lower Santa Ana River watersheds; the other three Urban Runoff Diversion Projects
were: the Santa Ana River, Huntington Beach Pump Station, and Greenville - Banning
Channel.
The purpose of the Urban Runoff Diversion Projects is to prevent untreated urban
runoff from reaching the ocean waters. Urban runoff has been suspected as one of
several possible sources that may contribute to high coliform bacteria counts along
Huntington State Beach. The projects include the installation of pumps to divert
over 95% of the non-storm runoff from the Talbert and Lower Santa Ana River watershed
to the nearby OCSD wastewater treatment plant. The proposed projects divert seasonal
urban runoff (containing animal waste, fertilizers, waste oils, and other chemicals
that are nutrients for bacteria) into the sanitary sewer system at four different
locations to reduce water pollution.
The project consisted of constructing low flow pumps to divert non-storm water urban
runoff to an OCSD trunk sewer line, an inflatable rubber dam, and a pump station.
This project is located within the City of Huntington Beach Huntington upstream
of Yorktown Ave and downstream of the confluence with Fountain Valley Channel.
