Project Stabilization Project
Serrano Creek Stabilization Project Stabilization Project
OCFCD Facility No. F19
Bake Parkway to Trabuco Road
Located in Lake Forest
Supervisorial District 5
Project Information
Serrano Creek is a tributary to San Diego Creek which flows into Upper Newport Bay.
Over the past decades, prior to implementation of the creek stabilization projects
in 2001 and 2002, Serrano Creek had suffered substantial channel and bank erosion,
resulting sediment deposition in Upper Newport Bay, degrading riparian habitat along
the creek, and threatening homes, infrastructure and recreational resources along
the creek.
Serrano Creek Stabilization Project evolved out of a multi-year planning process
and collaboration between the County of Orange, City of Lake Forest, the Serrano
Creek Conservancy, community members and federal and state regulatory agencies;
and was designed to balance flood management, habitat and recreation objectives.
The project included rock grade stabilization structures, rock bank protection and
other bio-engineering techniques like GeoWeb bank protection, Rock vanes, bendway
weirs and extensive replanting of creek edges and banks.
Cost: $2.2 million
